Life, Money and Gratitude # 25 Quickest way to learn: Teach

Teach to learn

There is this misconception that to teach you must have a degree or have years of experience before you can teach. Nonsense.

In reality all you need is to be slightly ahead of a companion who is also learning what you're learning.  Remember in school when you got paired up with a fellow student to go over something that was being taught, it was so easy because you were both at the same level, you could relate to each other.  This still holds true with whatever you are learning.

Take the little that you do understand and help someone else who is also learning to grasp what you already know.

When I was growing up I was in the Boy Scouts and we had this wonderful system of teaching called Skill Awards.  Things like camping, first aid and cooking were not taught by adults. Instead they were taught by a fellow scout who had just completed the skill.  This had a two fold result, the younger scout would learn something new and the scout doing the instructing would reinforce what he learned.

The scouts used the EDGE method (I’m sure there are many others):

  • Explain

  • Demonstrate

  • Guide

  • Enable

If you get the chance to teach as you go I strongly suggest that you do.

Until next time, God Bless be well.
